DENTAL
ELEVATOR
INTRODUCTION
Design of a Dental Elevator which has separate replaceable heads and one universal handle with a lock mechanism that will connect and disconnect with the head (shank + blade) in seconds without compromising the strength. This project was carried out from the real time problem statement given by a dental doctor.
RESEARCH
The project started with the problem statement obtained from a dentist who is currently in practice. With the help of the final year BDS student, a complete research on what is an elevator, what is it used for, how and where it is used, what are the types in it, similarities and differences in the types of elevators, parts of the elevator etc was carried out. Discussion on real time usage of the dental elevators was carried out with the doctor in person. This way the design opportunities were found and the work progress was made in that direction.
PROBLEMS / OPPORTUNITIES
The easy solution for these problems was to unite the handle and separate the head part and make them interchangeable. To achieve this, there was a need of a lock mechanism which can remove and hold the heads in seconds. The research was carried out in different lock mechanisms and their applications where the final lock mechanism of using a tube locker was finalised.
